At the Selections from the Tremaine Collection auction held by Christie's in 1988, Jasper Johns' masterpiece, a smaller version of "White Flag," sold for $7 million. This sale set a record for the highest auction price ever achieved for a work by a living artist until it was surpassed the next day by Johns' "False Start."
